Why Rawhide Is Dangerous for Dogs (And What to Give Them Instead)
Share
If you've ever grabbed a rawhide chew from the supermarket, you're not alone. They're cheap, widely available, and most dog owners assume they're safe. But here's the truth that the pet industry doesn't put on the packaging.
What is rawhide, really?
Rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry. It's the inner layer of cow or horse hide — the bit that doesn't make it into handbags and shoes. To turn it into something resembling a dog chew, it goes through an industrial process that would make your stomach turn:
- Chemical baths to remove hair and fat
- Hydrogen peroxide bleaching to make it white and "clean-looking"
- Industrial glue to press it into bone shapes and rolls
- Artificial flavouring to make dogs actually want to chew it
The end result is something that looks like a treat but is closer to a piece of processed leather.
The real risks
Choking hazard: Rawhide softens into large, slimy chunks that dogs can swallow whole. These chunks don't digest easily and can block the oesophagus or intestines.
Chemical contamination: Traces of the chemicals used in processing — including formaldehyde and arsenic-based preservatives — can remain in the finished product.
Digestive issues: Even when swallowed in small pieces, rawhide can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach irritation.
Dental damage: Dried rawhide can be extremely hard and has been known to crack teeth, especially in aggressive chewers.
What to give your dog instead
The good news? There are brilliant alternatives that are actually good for your dog:
- Air-dried meat chews — single-ingredient, fully digestible, and dogs go mad for them
- Fish skin rolls — great for dental health and packed with omega-3
- Sweet potato chews — a plant-based option that's gentle on sensitive stomachs
- Beef tendons — long-lasting and completely natural
At Woofy, every treat is single-ingredient with no additives, no chemicals, and absolutely no rawhide. Ever. Because your dog deserves real food, not industrial waste dressed up as a snack.
